How Will You Stay Sane This Holiday Season?

I love the holidays, but like many moms, they can stress me out. In a piece I wrote for the Learning Care Group, I share some of my favorite tips for remaining calm during the holiday season. One reminder that works for the holidays, and every day: Breathe! What’s your best tip?

Clogged Pipeline: Women Aren’t Choosing Law School

Here’s Hollee’s latest from the ABA Journal, on why women are choosing careers other than law. Statistics show that the number of women entering law school has been on the decline over the last decade, and at some schools, women are  fewer than 40 percent of entering classes.

Lawyer-moms often tell us that law is one of the most difficult professions for work/life balance. Do you agree?

Has Good Enough Is the New Perfect Helped You With Work/Life Balance?

Editor’s Note: Becky and I have both received so many lovely notes about Good Enough Is the New Perfect, and today it dawned on me that it might be nice to share some with our readers. Hopefully, it will make you realize that you are not alone in this struggle! The first is from Mary in New York City …

Hi Hollee,
I am just diving into your book, but wanted to let you know that I’m totally loving it so far.  In the first couple chapters, you’ve already hit on so many of the thoughts and feelings I’ve been grappling with this past year.

Natalie and Mary

I’m about 11 months into motherhood and work full-time as a hospital executive.  Things are going fairly well on all fronts, but the reality of the past year is certainly different than what I had previously envisioned being a working mom would be like.  As you touched on in your book, I have been surprised by both the loneliness and guilt that come with straddling career and family.  In a way, it is refreshing to hear that at least I’m not alone!
I have been actively working on changing my mindset to the “good enough” mentality, much thanks to my wonderful mother-in-law promoting this philosophy since Natalie was born.  I am extremely blessed with the support of a terrific in-home daycare provider and an amazing husband who help make working full-time possible.  My employer is also fairly family-friendly, and even offers the benefit of work/life counseling.  I actually met with someone for a couple months after returning from maternity leave to help me reset my own perfectionist expectations and better prioritize the balance.  Your book definitely is resonating with a lot of things that I’ve been thinking about and working on this past year.
I just wanted to drop you a quick note to say thank you for writing this very important body of work.  I also attached a photo of my sweet little daughter, Natalie, and me to brighten your day and to put faces with the names of who you are helping.  Natalie thanks you as well!
Warmly,
Mary
